A scene from my upcoming novel ~
A Foundation in Wisdom, the first book of the series An Orthogonal Universe
Vasigari checks on the progress of her favorite mathematician, Marcus, who had agreed to her request to prove the world doesn't exist.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
``I was wondering,'' Vasigari said. ``If... perhaps... you'd be interested in helping me.''
Marcus thought for a moment, drawing out a hum. Vasigari added, ``Of course, I'd be willing to compensate you.'' She leaned in close and said in a suggestive voice, ``very well.''
Marcus gulped. Vasigari smiled slyly. ``You can prove things don't exist, can't you?'' she asked.
Marcus stood up straight and tightened his shoulders. ``That is my specialty,'' he boasted.
``So if I were to ask you to prove away something,'' Vasigari said, ``you could do it... being the great hero you are?''
``Of course,'' Marcus said. He bowed slightly. ``I am at your service. Just tell me what it is you wish to be proven away, and I will get to work.''
Vasigari wasted no time replying. And, perhaps, Marcus didn't even hear her when she simply stated, ``The world.''
Marcus smiled and quickly agreed, ``Certainly.''
Vasigari grinned slightly and nodded. ``Excellent.''
It was then that the smile dropped from Marcus' face. ``Wait.''
