Mara and Theon ascending to the Thunder Storm City - Illustration for a chapter header of Stage II of An Orthogonal Universe. { Main Website } { About Project }

This piece started out as a simple drawing of a thunderstorm for #Devious-Deadlines weekly contest prompt #66 - which I missed. It would fit into the theme for the next week, though. The photo reference was a snapshot I took from a plane. In a bit of absentmindedness, I started to copy the wing of the B737. This turned into the large structure you see to the lower left, and the rest drew itself.

About half the work was done with MyPaint, and half with GIMP.

Revision 19 JUN 2012: Added towers, sharpened edges a bit.

This is a very cool picture. It is very original and it gives off the atmosphere of a city forever covered in darkness and storms. Many of the flaws in the pic are only minor.

Vision is 4. I love the idea you have here. A city covered with ominous dark clouds. But my problem here is that, if this is thunderstorm city, where is the storm? Where is the rain? Where is the lightning? This goes hand in hand with the impact.

Originality is 4 and a half. Same reason as above. It is a thunderstorm city, a city in the sky, but... no storm is going on. I just feel like, more could be happening, and more of the city's unique features could be shown.

Technique is 3. You have a few minor line issues. Some things could be straighter that others, but my biggest thing is the perseption of the piece. I say perseption because you intend it to be in the sky right? Well... If I didn't know better, I could also say that this is a very foggy graveyard or so. It doesn't have a sence of... depth.

Impact is 4. This piece grabbed my attention quickly. But it needs thunder, it needs rain, it needs more excitment to show that, "hey, this is a freaking THUNDER STORM CITY, not cloud city!"

I hope this critique helped!
