Rose City by merrak Rose City by merrak
The Rose City. Originally intended to be an illustration for A Foundation in Wisdom, but it no longer is relevant to any of the scenes in the book. It would work better for An Ember in the Wind, anyway.

MyPaint + GIMP, Ubuntu

It's been a while since I've been on here, so I thought I'd come see what you've been up to. Lots it would seem. :)

I stumbled on this one and instantly fell in love with it. Partly because roses are my thing (as evidenced by my avatar) and partly because I just really liked the composition. I love the color scheme you chose for the rose; it's actually my favorite variety in real life too. And the soft glow effect you gave it makes this feel very serene and magical.

I happen to know the sections from A Foundation in Wisdom this would have gone with, but I didn't think they featured roses. Am I remembering incorrectly?

Anyway, lovely work. Happy to have it grace my favorites folder. :)

Thank you for the kind words :)

I always had quite a few details in mind that I never bothered to write down, since I didn't think they were important enough to bother the reader with. They often found their way into any drawings. The entire scene where Marcus took Peoria into the leaf city came to me as I was watching a bush outside the window of my old house. The bush had several of those roses, and one night I took a picture of one.

Speaking of A Foundation in Wisdom, I might have an opportunity to do a book signing at a Barnes and Noble in NC. I'm waiting to see if it works out.

That is a huge rose. I'd hate to get stabbed by one of those thorns! This is a very interesting mix of futuristic cityscape and organic structure. I rather like it. The rose looks like its glowing - a nice effect with the light on the buildings.

Is it a huge rose... or a tiny city? :) I actually don't know ~ I'm starting to think I should add a character in there for reference... or just to make it more interesting.

I suppose it is all just a matter of perspective. I rather like the piece characterless it has a magical quiet feel to it. :D
